Congratulations on the birth of your baby!

New Parents

Dear New Parents,

We know that, with the news that your baby has Down syndrome, you may have questions and experience a myriad of emotions. As you begin this journey, we want you to know that we are here to offer you our encouragement, experiences and support.

We would like to let you know that we have available new parent information packets, a free complimentary copy of the book Babies with Down Syndrome: A New Parent’s Guide and parent volunteers who have 'been there' willing to listen and share their experiences with you. We welcome the opportunity to offer our support, share these resources with you and help you find the answers to your questions and concerns.

Please feel free to call us at (541) 776-9805 or contact us via email. We would be happy to answer questions and connect you with a parent support volunteer.

There are many valuable books, stories, videos and websites to help you learn more about Down syndrome and move forward on your new journey. Below are a few of our favorites. We hope these resources will help you understand how having a child with Down syndrome can enhance your family.

"Welcome to Holland" is an inspirational story written by Emily Perl Kingsely when asked to describe what it's like to raise a child with a disability.

Promising Future Together Video is an exceptually good, informative and indepth video produced by the National Down Syndrome Society for new and expectant parents.

www.brightertomorrows.org is a wonderful website with information for parents who have just received a prenatal or postnatal diagnosis.

DSASO's New Parent Packets contain current information on Down syndrome, important contacts, heartwarming stories, resources and more. New Parent Packets are available at area hospitals and can also be requested by contacting us.

Babies with Down Syndrome: A guide for New Parents is a wonderful book that covers all aspects of care for babies and young children with Down syndrome. It includes daily care, family life, intervention, education and legal and medical issues. To receive a free complimentary copy, in either English or Spanish, contact us and a free copy will be mailed to you.

Gifts - Mothers Reflect on How Children with Down Syndrome Enrich Theirs Lives is a beautifully written book full of 63 stories about raising a child with Down syndrome.  Copies can be ordered here.

Kansas City Down Syndrome Guild's New Beginnings Magazine is a great resource filled with stories from families who have taken the same journey you are on now.

Diagnosis Down Syndrome: This website’s purpose is to inform you of the life realities that a person with Down syndrome can look forward to today and includes stories and photos from parents of children with Down syndrome.

Once again, Congratulations! If you have questions, need more information or would like to connect with one of our parents who have walked in the same shoes, please contact Ann Marie at the DSASO office by calling 541-776-9805 or contact us.

We look forward to meeting you and your family!
